Caries is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that have the ability to demineralize the hard tissues of the tooth (enamel and dentin), starting with the enamel and advancing rapidly through the less mineralized and therefore softer dentin. If demineralization progresses and is not treated, the bacteria will eventually invade the pulp, causing infection, pain, inflammation, and ultimately abscesses. This often occurs asymptomatically and is not visible, which does not mean that we should not disinfect and remove the contaminated pulp. If left untreated, the condition becomes chronic within the bone, and bacteria live and reproduce inside.
