ENDODONCIA

Endodontics is the specialty that encompasses treatments related to the pulp tissue or also known as the nerve. It is common for cavities not to cause discomfort unless they are very advanced and approach the nerve. When a sharp pain suddenly appears in any dental piece, it is usually because a cavity has reached the tooth’s nerve. This pain is described as one of the most unbearable that humans experience… Infected tooth nerves do not always hurt; sometimes, they go unnoticed and asymptomatic for the patient or often manifest with the appearance of an abscess. At Anita Ankova Clinic in Navalcarnero, we are specialists in endodontics.

This pain is caused by the inflammation of the pulpal or nerve tissue invaded by bacteria from the cavity. These bacteria could invade the entire body systemically, as the nerve tissue of the teeth is connected to our body’s bloodstream. Endodontic treatment is the last resort to save a natural tooth… For these reasons, it is vitally important to have check-ups every 6 months to detect asymptomatic cavities that are often not visible to the human eye and require specific radiographs for detection and diagnosis. There are occasions when small fractures occur in old fillings, and bacteria seep under these restorations, necessitating cleaning again before the bacteria reach the pulpal or nerve tissue.

When do we need to perform endodontic treatment?

There are cases where it is necessary to remove the nerve, and it is not due to cavities but due to trauma, occlusal trauma from bruxism/clenching, or hypersensitivity that does not subside with medication. The use of analgesics and/or antibiotics only alleviates the problem, but it is not resolved until we perform root canal treatment. Root canal treatment involves removing the contaminated and inflamed pulp, irrigating with disinfectants to eliminate present bacteria, and sealing the pulp chamber and the canals that contained the nerve with materials and cements specially indicated for these treatments. With this sealing, we prevent the passage of bacteria from the mouth into the pulp chamber.
